India and China successfully complete troop disengagement at Depsang and Demchok along LAC

India and China have finished their military disengagement process in the areas of Demchok and Depsang along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. According to sources, both nations’ forces will soon begin coordinated patrolling. This follows agreements to pull back troops and equipment to positions held before April 2020, focusing only on these specific zones.

Symbolic steps and future dialogue

The disengagement marks a significant diplomatic achievement following rising tensions since the 2020 Galwan clash. On Diwali, both sides will exchange sweets, signaling a gesture of goodwill. However, discussions continue on other unresolved zones along the LAC.
India's Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, noted that this is just the first step toward peace and stability. He explained that further steps will focus on "de-escalation" and ongoing boundary discussions. Building trust, he emphasized, is essential to reducing tensions in the long term, as both sides work on more lasting border solutions.
